OUR PROGRAM

The Los Osos Theatre Department exists to provide a four-year training program for both actors and technicians. Our goal is to provide students access to professional training in a positive environment with high standards and support.

The program was built cooperatively through years of effort by Tim Tackett, Michael Kremer and Randy Shorts over more than half a century. The program began its roots at Montclair High School in the early 1970s, continued through Etiwanda High School in the 1990s and continues to grow and develop into the future. We provide students access to numerous styles of acting and help them to develop their own unique toolkit to prepare them for future theatrical and other professional endeavors. Former students have found professional work on the stage and on the screen both nationally and internationally. In addition to our students work in entertainment fields, our students have gone on to many successful careers in medicine, law, education and numerous service industries.

Our Technical Theatre curriculum is taught by Randy Shorts M.A. in Theatrical Production and Design from SOU. With over 20 years of educational theatre and over 75 shows to his credit, students are exposed to all aspects of Technical Theatre from front of house to every aspect of backstage work. Students receive a tremendous amount of training and experience in a professional and fun environment that prepares them for work or future study in all aspects of Tech. Former students have found work locally and nationally after their time in Technical Theatre class.

CURRICULUM

Making excellence a habit and preparing all students for college and careers
through their work in the Fine Arts.

DRAMA ONE

An Intro to the Stage

In our introductory level Drama class, students learn practical acting skills, explore human experiences using psychological insights, historical and cultural contexts, and develop their abilities to interpret written works. The experiences of cooperative learning and peer review are a constant, and the public display of each student’s work is practically a daily occurrence. Through their experiences in drama classes students learn practical skills, are artistically challenged, and often gain personal insights.

ADVANCED ACTING CLASSES

Drama 2 & Drama 3/4

In addition to the skills gained in Drama One, our advanced acting students also focus on:

  • Developing proficiency in a variety of acting techniques

  • Exploring a variety of acting styles

  • An introduction and study of vocal and movement training for the stage

  • Acting in historical contexts

  • Developing effective audition techniques

  • Developing professional rehearsal techniques

  • Expanding their personal acting toolkit

TECHNICAL THEATRE

Four-Year Training Program

The Technical Theatre class offers training in the practical side of technical theater. Design, properties, costuming, sound, lighting, basic scenic construction and theater management are introduced, explored, and used through the student’s experiences in classes and through the practical application of their learning in the theater. Each year of experience the student has brings increasing understanding of the behind the scenes skills necessary to operate a theater and produce a show and increasing responsibility for specific aspects of these shows. The skills gained in this course are directly transferable to jobs in the Technical Theatre workplace and provide initial job training for those interested in pursuing a career in Technical Theatre.
